Instructions/Notes

ASCII art are pictures drawn with printable letters, numbers, and symbols in the ASCII character set. The most common ASCII art today is the smiley face :). This is a sideway face drawn with a colon followed by a closing parenthesis. In the 1980s, prior to HTML and advanced graphics, combination of ASCII characters where used by bulletin board services (BBS) - the predecessor to today's websites - to create their logo or other graphical elements. These were crude images by today's standard and it illustrates the level of 'graphics' available at the time.

This tool will take a color or black-and-white image file and convert it into ASCII art. To use, drag and drop your image in the upload area below and click Upload. This ASCII art generator is based on the creation of Artur Graniszewski.

ASCII Art

To get the best resulting ASCII art, please consider the following when selecting your image to upload:

  • High Contrast - Images with clear distinctions between light and dark areas work best. Avoid images that are overly complex or have subtle color variations.
  • Simple Composition - Images with simple subjects and less clutter translate better into ASCII art. Portraits, logos, or basic objects are more recognizable.
  • Small Dimensions - ASCII art is limited in resolution. Smaller images (or scaled-down versions of large images) will yield better result. Your uploaded image will be resized to 100 pixels wide, so smaller, less detailed images are ideal.
  • Monochrome or Limited Colors - Images with fewer colors or well-separated tones create clearer ASCII representations. Colored ASCII art works best if the original image has distinct colors that translate well into RGB.
  • Clear Edges - Images with well-defined outlines or sharp edges (e.g., a subject against a plain background) are easier to interpret in ASCII art.

Some examples of good images to upload are as follows:

  1. Silhouettes - Simple black-and-white silhouettes produce excellent contrast.
  2. Cartoons or Line Art - These often have clear outlines and minimal color gradients.
  3. Logos - Minimalist logos or icons with clean designs work well.
  4. Portraits - Close-up faces with good lighting and high contrast can yield recognizable results.
  5. Landscapes - Simple landscapes with distinct features like mountains, trees, or a sunset can be visually appealing
